How to customise the background in Microsoft Teams…

We returned to work after the glorious Easter weekend to find that Microsoft Teams has rolled out the update that we’ve all been waiting for.

Yes it’s here, customised backgrounds for video calls!

With the global pandemic meaning that many of us are consigned to working remotely, working from home or in new environments, now is the time that employee engagement really matters.

So, no more blurred out backgrounds to hide the menagerie of animals, or that pile of laundry that we really don’t have the time (?!) to get to right now.

Finding the feature in your Microsoft Teams app is very straight forward.

Just launch a video chat in the same way that you usually would and click on the triple-dots so that it shows your advanced settings.

If you have had the feature rolled out to you, you will now see a sub-menu like this…

Click on ‘show background effects’ and your workspace will be transformed by one of the many backgrounds that have been created for you.

The standard selection includes background like this…

Here’s where it gets interesting…

The backgrounds can be changed – so you can create your very own branded customised backdrop – very useful for meeting with clients, suppliers and members of your team.

To do this, you’ll need out where Microsoft Teams stores its background images. In your File Explorer, type “%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds”. Here you’ll see a folder called ‘Uploads’ which are the images that Microsoft Teams uses.

You can now create your own customised background, ideally with the same ratio to the images you can see in the folder.
