Students brush up on graffiti art skills

Artistic students from Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College are brushing up on their graffiti skills to create a giant painting which will take centre stage at the forthcoming Creative Minds Festival at the Regent Theatre.

The youngsters who are following a variety of A Level and BTEC art and media courses at the innovative Leek Road campus will be creating 10ft high graffiti backdrops with a distinctly patriotic theme.

The artwork crafted by twenty students in conjunction with Creative Arts North Staffordshire will then form the backdrop of the stage setting for the city’s first ever week-long festival of performing and creative arts for young people between July 3 and 7.

Helen Morgan, course leader for Creative Media Production and Photography said: “The Creative Minds Festival is a brilliant forum for showcasing our young peoples’ talents, and our students have really embraced this opportunity.

“Chris Guest, a local community artist is working with the students to create the giant 10ft by 8ft canvasses over the next couple of days, and we’re hoping the artistic vibe spreads as they paint the canvasses in full view of the students in the college atrium.”

The project is also being taken one step further at the Sixth Form College with two teams of media and photography students shooting a documentary of the art project, and this will also become part of the vibrant Regent Theatre stage shows.

The Bertarelli Foundation Creative Minds Festival runs from Tuesday July 3 to Saturday July 7 and is packed with things to do, see and experience all within The Regent Theatre.

The Bertarelli Foundation supports charities and activities across the UK and internationally, working the fields of science, the environment, culture, education and sport. Kirsty Bertarelli, the wife of the foundation’s founder was born in Staffordshire and spent her childhood in Stoke-on-Trent.
